Amazon has formed a team to build a home robot and is hiring for what its job listings call a "new-to-world robot product," CNBC reported on November 8 after analyzing the postings. Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser said the company is committed to personal robotics and continues to support Astro customers.

What the listings and reporting show

Amazon bought New York-based Fauna Robotics in March. Fauna makes Sprout, a 3.5-foot humanoid, and became part of a new Personal Robotics Group. CNBC said some staff in the group previously worked at Lab126, the unit behind Kindle, Echo, Fire TV and Fire Tablet.

  • A June posting sought to "create robots that are not just functional, but delightful"
  • An October listing sought a Fauna field support engineer
  • Another listing sought a UX designer to define what it feels like to live with a Fauna robot
  • Earlier in 2026, Amazon redeployed much of the Astro team and brought in an unnamed MIT roboticist

The Astro history

Jeff Bezos pushed for a home robot in 2017. Astro was unveiled in fall 2021 at a reported $1,450 and stayed invite-only, reaching a few thousand customers. A business version launched in 2023 and was shut down in less than a year. Amazon also tried to buy iRobot in 2022 but walked away two years later.

Ken Washington, Amazon's former vice president of consumer robotics, told CNBC he pushed for a bipedal robot but leadership disagreed.

Industry context

Amazon says it runs more than one million warehouse robots, a business that began with its $775 million purchase of Kiva Systems in 2012. CNBC cited Barclays estimates that the humanoid market, now $2 billion to $3 billion, could reach about $40 billion by 2035, and PitchBook data showing $33.4 billion of robotics and physical-AI venture funding in the first half of 2026. Apple is reportedly developing several home robots. Amazon has not announced a product, price or release date.
