Tesla will end production of the Cybertruck in 2027, CEO Elon Musk said in a post on X, TechCrunch reported on November 6. Musk said the factory space will be used to build more of the two-seat Cybercab robotaxi.

What was said

The Cybertruck is built at Tesla's Texas factory. According to TechCrunch, the plant was originally referred to as the "Cybertruck factory" before construction began. Musk did not, in the account TechCrunch gave, provide an exact end date within 2027.

How the truck compares with the original pitch

TechCrunch's reporting sets the shipped product against early claims:

  • When first deliveries began in late 2023, Musk predicted roughly 250,000 sales a year. Tesla has sold what TechCrunch described as "tens of thousands" over three years.
  • The truck was first promised at under $40,000; the base price rose to about $60,000.
  • The top-end range fell by more than 100 miles from the original 500-mile target.
  • Launch was delayed by about two years, partly because of Covid-19.

Why it matters

TechCrunch described the Cybertruck as the third product Tesla has discontinued as it repositions itself as an AI and robotics company. Earlier in 2026 the company ended Model S and Model X production and repurposed that factory space to build Optimus humanoid robots.

Cybercabs have operated in Austin for about two months, TechCrunch said, with an expansion to Dallas planned for later in November. Tesla's Model Y robotaxis run in Austin, Houston, Dallas and three Florida cities.

The article also noted that the truck's polarizing design never gained broad appeal at its higher-than-expected price, and that Musk's political activity made it a target for protests in 2024 and 2025.

Context

Tesla's [third-quarter results](/news/tesla-q3-2026-optimus-production-fremont-profit-falls-43-percent/) showed profit down 43 percent as the company shifted spending toward Optimus and autonomy. Tesla has not published a separate release on the Cybertruck decision, and details such as the wind-down timeline, existing orders and warranty support had not been announced at the time of the report.
