Anduril and Qualcomm announced BlueChip on Tuesday, October 27, a hardened laptop for military, government, first-responder and law-enforcement users, TechCrunch reported. Preorders are planned for 2027, and no price has been announced.

Hardware and software

BlueChip uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series chip that is made at TSMC's new Arizona facility. It is an Arm-based machine. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said the chip uses the same architecture as other laptops, including Microsoft's Surface line. Anduril is working to support Windows applications, Linux distributions used by the government and older legacy software.

Because of its rugged design, which resists rain and dust, TechCrunch reported the laptop will be heavy and have limited battery life.

Supply chain

Anduril founder Palmer Luckey said that, "As of right now, the laptop's bill of materials is about 90% U.S. and allied." The company plans a roadmap to 100% domestic production. Some parts, including the display, are currently made only in China, though Anduril has found a US supplier for the display glass. Anduril has not finished contracting with all of its suppliers.

Price and customers

Luckey estimated BlueChip will cost about 20% more than typical high-end PCs. The first model is not designed for consumers; Anduril may keep a waitlist, and Luckey said a consumer would be better off buying a Dell laptop because it would be cheaper. TechCrunch cited rugged computers as a market of roughly $5 billion.

Why it matters

US government buyers are required to purchase US-made computers, and BlueChip is pitched as having a transparent, auditable supply chain. It is the first model in a planned line.

The announcement follows Qualcomm's ongoing push into PC chips, and it adds a defense-focused customer for TSMC's Arizona production.
