Anthropic's amended registration statement, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission and reported by TechCrunch on November 2, says the company may soon reach the point where AI materially speeds up its own development.

What the filing says

The revised S-1/A includes updated risk-factor language. According to TechCrunch, Anthropic wrote that using AI to build more capable AI "could also pose a considerable safety risk, particularly if it sharply accelerates the pace of progress."

Key points reported:

  • Anthropic's internal estimates indicate it "may imminently meet" the definition of "dramatically accelerated progress attributable to AI" in its Responsible Scaling Policy (RSP).
  • The company said it has not designated any current model as exceeding that threshold and is still assessing the data.
  • It said it has in the past not identified significant acceleration in its development until after it occurred, and that it has already used AI to develop new models whose capability jumps it did not recognize at the time.
  • It does not expect to safely let Claude autonomously design successive frontier model generations without meaningful human supervision, and is considering RSP updates to keep humans in control.

Context

The idea is often called recursive self-improvement, or RSI: AI systems that get good enough at AI research to speed their own progress. TechCrunch noted that the term became popular earlier in 2026 and that many viewed it as a buzzword.

The outlet also observed that an S-1 serves as both a disclosure document and a marketing document, so claims about capability should be read with that in mind. It said Claude's abilities in coding, math and cybersecurity have grown substantially this year.

Anthropic first filed publicly for its IPO on October 26, with the ticker "ANT," according to earlier reporting. The amendment also contained updated financials, which TechCrunch described as showing soaring revenue and rising expenses; the outlet's summary did not give figures.
