Flapping Airplanes, an AI research lab founded about a year ago, announced a $1 billion Series A round on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Bloomberg reported the valuation at $6 billion, according to TechCrunch.

The round

Index and Lux co-led the financing. TechCrunch listed earlier backers Sequoia, GV and Kleiner Perkins among the participants, alongside Valor, Atreides, A* and Nvidia.

The company launched nine months ago with a $180 million seed round from GV, Sequoia and Index that valued it at $1.5 billion. The reported valuation is roughly four times that figure.

Who is behind it

  • Aidan Smith: a founder and former Thiel fellow who worked at Neuralink while in college.
  • Asher Spector: a statistics PhD at Stanford.
  • Ben Spector: a computer science PhD student at Stanford who founded Prod while at MIT.

Prod is a five-year-old, student-run startup accelerator. Sequoia partner David Cahn, an investor in the company, called it "one of the most powerful talent incubators in Silicon Valley," and described Flapping Airplanes as "the young person's AGI lab."

What it is building

The lab says it wants to build AI systems that need less data and cost less to train and run. "A model that's a million times more data efficient is probably a million times easier to put into the economy," Asher Spector said.

On the technical side, the founders describe their work as "the world's most complete megakernel framework." They claim it can overlap memory-bound inference with compute-bound training so GPUs are not left idle. These are the company's own claims, and TechCrunch did not report independent benchmarks.

Context

Nvidia, which supplies the GPUs the company's megakernel work is aimed at, is listed among the investors.
