Nvidia said on October 13 it will donate $250 million over five years to support research on the safety and security of agentic AI in the United Kingdom. The contribution is computing access rather than cash, worth about $50 million a year.
How it will work
The compute will be delivered through UK-based Nvidia Cloud Partners, with the infrastructure hosted in the U.K. Nvidia said provider selection, technical architecture and commercial terms are still to be agreed.
Research areas include secure AI agents, open-model security and mitigation of real-world threats. Planned work includes secure sandboxes, reproducible research and safety benchmarks, using Nvidia's OpenShell software and its Sentry reference design.
Who benefits
Most of the funding is intended for the broader UK AI safety and security research community. A portion is earmarked for:
- the British Open-Ended Learning and Discovery Lab (BOLD), led by Oxford
- the Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab (SOFAIR), led by UCL
- Imperial College London
"AI capability and safety must advance together," said Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang. U.K. AI Minister Kanishka Narayan called the commitment "a vote of confidence" in the country's AI research strength.
Context
The donation builds on Nvidia's existing work with British researchers, including the University of Bristol's Isambard-AI supercomputer, which runs on Nvidia Grace Hopper Superchips. UK officials linked the initiative to safe AI deployment and the country's G20 presidency.
It follows Nvidia's $1 billion, five-year commitment to U.S. science research announced last week.
