OpenAI Launches GPT-6.1 Terra, a Cheaper Model for Computer Use
The smaller model is priced at $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, and OpenAI says it completes tasks more than three times faster than its larger models.
OpenAI on Monday, October 26, released GPT-6.1 Terra, a smaller and lower-cost model aimed at computer use, visual reasoning, coding and everyday work, BleepingComputer reported. OpenAI describes it as a fast, efficient model with detailed visual reasoning and precise computer use.
Pricing and availability
API pricing is $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. OpenAI says that is 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. The model is available through the API as `gpt-6.1-terra`, and to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex.
What OpenAI claims
All of the following figures come from OpenAI and were not independently verified in the report:
- On the Agents' Last Exam at medium reasoning effort, Terra scored 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at about one-third of the cost.
- OpenAI says Terra performs on par with GPT-6 Astra at one-tenth of the price per token, and finishes tasks more than three times faster than both GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
- On an internal benchmark, the error rate at low reasoning effort fell from 53.6% for GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7%. At maximum effort it fell by 18 percentage points to 4.3%.
- On Terminal-Bench 4.0 at maximum effort, Terra scored 50.3%, against 21.5% for GPT-5.6 Terra.
OpenAI still recommends GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra for the most complex coding tasks.
Target uses
The company points to tasks such as filling out forms, editing video, interpreting technical drawings and automating repetitive desktop work.
Context
The release follows OpenAI's earlier GPT-6 launch covered on this site. Lower-priced models matter to developers building agents, which can consume large numbers of tokens per task. Benchmark results published by a vendor can differ from results in independent testing.
