Replit CEO Says Company Is No Longer Working With Anthropic, Citing Cost and Performance
Amjad Masad made the remark at TechCrunch Disrupt; unnamed insiders told TechCrunch the partnership is still in place.
Replit CEO Amjad Masad said onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt that his company no longer works with Anthropic, according to TechCrunch. The claim is disputed: unnamed people familiar with the partnership told the outlet it remains in place, and Replit had not responded to a request for clarification.
What Masad said
Masad said the decision rested on "cost, partnership, and performance," and that "I think ChatGPT is better now." He said that, on Replit's internal and public benchmarks, OpenAI's models perform better at building applications from scratch. Replit announced a partnership with OpenAI in August.
Replit sells a browser-based platform for building and deploying software. Under its Anthropic relationship it used Claude models to run the platform, which TechCrunch said helped the company grow revenue significantly.
Conflicting evidence
- A late-September Replit blog post cited Anthropic's Claude models running in Replit Agent's production environment.
- Around the same time, a Replit product employee posted about using Anthropic's Opus 5.5.
- Before the remarks, there had been no public sign that Replit had left Anthropic.
Business figures
Replit did not disclose annual recurring revenue. Masad said enterprise was about 2% of revenue last year and is about 15% this year, and that more than half of revenue is business-to-business. He also said AI agents need a "habitat," listing orchestration, error recovery, sandboxing, networking, identity and authorization among its elements.
Anthropic had not publicly commented in the report. Whether Replit has fully moved off Claude models remains unclear.
