Volvo Cars and Nvidia said on October 15 that they are expanding a partnership that began in 2017, aiming to bring automated driving that can handle a trip from door to door to future Volvo vehicles.
What was announced
According to Nvidia's release, the system is meant to operate in complex settings including highways, busy urban streets and parking scenarios. It will debut in a next-generation Volvo, part of what the carmaker described as its largest-ever product push. The companies plan to introduce "eyes-off" and "mind-off" driving gradually.
The technology stack includes:
- Nvidia Hyperion, the sensor and compute architecture
- Nvidia Halos OS, a safety-focused operating layer
- Nvidia Alpamayo Stack, the driving software
Missing details
The release did not name the vehicle, give a launch date or pricing, or say when eyes-off or mind-off driving will arrive.
Quotes
Volvo Cars chief executive HÃ¥kan Samuelsson said Volvo has been "synonymous with car safety for almost 100 years," and that the partnership combines that knowledge with Nvidia's AI technology. Nvidia founder and chief executive Jensen Huang said accelerated computing has turned the car into an intelligent machine that can understand the world around it.
Context
Volvo Cars, founded in 1927, said it sold more than 710,000 cars in 2025, 46% of them electrified, and is listed on Nasdaq Stockholm. It aims to become a fully electric carmaker and reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
The announcement came one day before Nvidia and Mercedes-Benz announced their own expanded automated driving partnership, built on the same set of Nvidia technologies.
